Festival for architecture 2018
At the end of 2018, I was selected to join a team of 20 students to represent Massey University in Christchurch for FESTA (The Festival of Architecture). The focus of our project was to design a temporary bar space through partnering with local brewery 'Punky Brewster'. Visually, we wanted to draw entirely on the visual qualities of microbes found within the beer making process. I was assigned to the team that designed the furniture for the bar. However, I also had a role in meeting with both 'Punky Brewster' and the 'FESTA' team to discuss ideas and then relay this information back to the team. Below are photographs of the development process and our space set up at the event.
A key aim for our project was to use both recycled materials and limit our overall waste from the event. In our team we utilised kegs provided by 'Punky Brewster' as the main structural support for the table tops. A goal of ours was to effectively use the limited space we had been allocated, inturn, we used interlocking hexagonal tops for the final design. Painted along each 'MDF' top are various chemical symbols of reactions that occur during the beer making process. We painted these in white so they would standout under the LED lighting projected into the space. The development process involved scale modelling before leading to mock-up 1:1 testing. Early in development we found that illuminating painted plastic domes from within produced a similar visuals to the beer making sample photos.
